What Has Changed in Website Design, and Why It Matters
Four shifts have changed what a business website has to do.
AI search reads structure, not style
Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity now answer questions before a visitor reaches your site, and they cite pages that are clearly structured, fast and specific. Clean headings, schema markup and plain content get quoted. A page built as one big image does not.
Mobile is the site, not a version of it
Most visits now arrive on a phone, and Google measures your Core Web Vitals on mobile. Speed on a mid-range handset on a patchy connection is the standard the site is judged by.
Three platforms cover most needs
WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify have matured to the point where most businesses belong on one of them. The question is no longer whether to use a platform but which one, and how to move an old site onto it without losing what it has earned.
Conversion is measured, not assumed
With proper tracking in place, a site is judged on enquiries, bookings and sales rather than on opinions about the design. That changes how it is planned: every page has a next step, and every step is measured.
Website Design & Development Services for UK Businesses
Six areas of work. Most projects combine two or three, and every one is scoped and priced before it starts.
Website Design & UX
Wireframes and design shown on a real page rather than a static mock-up, built around your customers and the action you need them to take, and tested on a phone before it is built.
WordPress Development
Custom WordPress themes for brochure and lead generation sites, with no page-builder bloat and no plugin sprawl. You manage your own content, and the site stays fast as it grows.
WooCommerce Development
WooCommerce stores for businesses that want to own their shop outright: custom product setups, trade pricing, delivery rules, and integrations with Sage, Xero, stock and fulfilment systems. Rolling Center, moved from Craft Commerce to WooCommerce, is the example.
Shopify Stores
Shopify builds and theme customisation for product businesses that want a hosted platform, with only the apps that earn their place, and custom app development where the app you need does not exist.
Website Replatforming & Migration
Moving an established site off a platform that has been abandoned, outgrown or locked to a developer, with every URL redirected, rankings protected and integrations reconnected before go-live.
Support & Development After Launch
Security updates, backups, monitoring and content changes on a month-to-month retainer, plus new features and integrations as the business needs them. No long-term contract.

We would rather a website of ours was not judged on looks alone. A good one supports your goals and gives you results you can measure, which is why we get to know your business before we make a single design decision: how you make money, who you are selling to, and what the site has to achieve.
Fast, stable and scalable is the baseline, with clean code and Core Web Vitals as standard. Because we are also a marketing business, conversion tracking is designed in from the start, and the site is built to work with SEO and paid search rather than to be retrofitted for them later.
Two examples: Rolling Center, a full re-platform from Craft Commerce to WooCommerce integrated with Sage 50, Opayo and analytics, that lifted revenue 52% year-on-year in the first quarter after launch on just 27% more ad spend, and Mendabath, where a website refresh alongside Google Ads work lifted leads 84% and cut cost per acquisition by a third.
Through all of it you stay in the loop: what is happening, why a decision has been made, and what comes next, with no jargon and no account managers in between.

Fast load times, Core Web Vitals optimisation and clean code architecture.
Goal-Driven Design
Every design decision serves a purpose: to help you convert and grow.
Fixed Price, Fixed Scope
A written scope and a fixed quote before design starts. Changes are priced before they affect the cost.
Senior People Throughout

Our Website Design Process
Four clear stages, from first conversation to launch day, so no part of your project is ever a mystery.
Discovery & Briefing
We start by understanding your business, your goals, your audience, and what success looks like. We ask the right questions up front so nothing is guessed and nothing is missed. You receive a clear project scope and fixed-price breakdown before anything begins.
Design & UX
Wireframes, visual concepts, and user experience mapped around your goals. You see exactly how the site will work and look before a line of code is written, and you review and approve the design at each stage, so nothing about the build catches you off guard.
Build & Integration
Clean, fast, fully responsive development. Performance optimised from the ground up, with all integrations, forms, and functionality built and tested thoroughly before launch. We build to modern web standards and make sure Core Web Vitals pass, because performance feeds directly into both SEO and conversion rate.
Launch & Ongoing Support
Thorough cross-device and cross-browser testing, followed by a smooth, planned launch. We handle redirects, analytics setup, and post-launch refinements. Your website is a long-term asset, so we stay on hand with ongoing support and further development as your business evolves.
Website Design & Development FAQ
Straightforward answers to the questions we hear most, with no jargon and no spin.
Are you a freelance web designer, or an agency?
Plenty of clients come to us having been let down by that very choice: a freelance web designer who went quiet, or an agency that put a junior on the account. We keep the close, personal service and add the reliability of a team, with the founders doing the work.
How long does a website take to build?
Most websites take two to six weeks from kick-off to launch: two to three for a brochure site of five to ten pages, four to six for a larger lead generation site, an online store or a replatforming project. You get a firm timeline in the project scope before work begins.
How much does a website cost?
Cost follows scope: the number of distinct page layouts, how far the design is customised, the functionality and any integrations. A well-built brochure site starts from around £1,500, and lead generation and e-commerce builds typically start from £3,000. You get a fully scoped, fixed-price proposal before we start, and if budget is tight we build in stages.
WordPress, WooCommerce or Shopify: which should I use?
WordPress for most service businesses and anyone who needs to manage their own content. WooCommerce when you sell online and want to own the store, its data and its integrations outright. Shopify when you want a hosted platform with less to maintain. We recommend the one that fits how you sell, and we build custom PHP where none of the three fits.
Can you move my website to a new platform without losing rankings?
Yes, if the move is planned as a migration rather than a redesign. We map every old URL to its new home, keep the page titles and content that already rank, reconnect the integrations, test on a staging site while the old one keeps trading, and check Search Console after launch. Rolling Center moved from Craft Commerce to WooCommerce this way with minimal disruption.
How does a new website fit with SEO, Google Ads and tracking?
Every site we build includes the SEO foundations: heading structure, clean code, fast load times, meta tags, schema markup and a sitemap. Analytics and conversion tracking are configured before launch, so the site measures enquiries from day one. If you want to build on that, our SEO and paid search teams are the same people.
Do you offer ongoing maintenance and support?
Yes. Support retainers cover security updates, plugin management, backups, uptime monitoring and minor content changes, month to month with no long-term contract. When you need custom functionality after launch, our custom software team builds it.
Can you write the content and arrange photography as well as build the site?
Yes. Copy that says what you do plainly and photography of your actual premises, team and work make a bigger difference to conversion than most design decisions. Both are scoped and priced as separate items, so you can supply your own if you prefer.
